I wanted to reach out to you after reading Ghost of Johanna, a story that lingers quietly and powerfully long after the final page.
What struck me most is how gently you approach an unbearably heavy reality. Angelina’s fear, confusion, and longing are rendered with deep empathy, never sensationalized. The abandonment is not treated as a plot device but as a lived wound, one that shapes every choice the sisters must make. You allow young readers and adults to feel the weight of that moment without overwhelming them.
Johanna herself is beautifully ambiguous. Apparition, spirit, angel, or survival instinct given voice, she functions as all of these at once. That uncertainty is one of the book’s great strengths. Rather than explaining hope, you embody it. Johanna becomes the presence that trauma sometimes needs in order to be endured, especially by children who cannot yet articulate their fear.
The journey from El Salvador to Texas is portrayed with restraint and respect. You never lose sight of the human scale: small bodies, limited strength, impossible odds. And yet the book never collapses into despair. Its power lies in its quiet insistence that compassion, imagination, and love can coexist with danger.
I also appreciate the bilingual and cross-cultural reach of the work. Making this story available in Spanish as well as English expands not only its audience, but its moral relevance. This is a book that meets children where they are, linguistically and emotionally.
Ghost of Johanna is not simply a story about migration or loss, it is about the forms hope takes when adults are absent and the world feels unsafe. That is no small achievement.

Death of a Nation

Just impeach him! He’s not the first asshole to get elected. Instead of asking we the people, whom he is bankrupting, to cover all the bills, just file a hundred thousand motions to impeach him and all his flying monkeys.

If he is demanding bribes from established businesses, and in response they are caving in and paying him thousands upon thousands of dollars just to keep their business running. Well, my friends, this is called bribery, fraud, graft, and terrorism.

No one person, including the POTUS, has the right to terrorize and bankrupt the nation they were hired to serve. My God, if we did even a billionth of the horrendous things he has done and has planned to do, we would be imprisoned for life. Today, we the people need to demand that our senators and relresentatives file the motion for impeachment. If need be, file it every damn day, or if our elected representatives are too scared of papa dictator, allow we the people to vote on his impeachment in a free and fair election.

We all know that he did not legally win this last election. He bought it or he threatened for it.

This “not my president” is following every move hitler made. And in the end, if he is not stopped, we will no longer be the United States of America, land of the free and home of the brave. We will be hitler’s death camps. We will be merely minions who will be thrashed and abused by a horrid dictator.

And, NO, Donald, WE THE PEOPLE DO NOT WANT A DICTATOR! Your very act of stating this breaks all U.S. laws for it threatens our Constitution and our Bill of Rights, which are guaranteed to us in these sacred documents. 

How many terroristic actions will be allowed before we are destroyed by his madness? Even now, as I sit and write this plea, dump has somehow managed to add twelve new repugnants into the house in order to rig this election for the house and senate.

One of the bills he is introducing prohibits married women from voting. And, yet, here we stand as if nothing can be done. Does no one in Congress or the house have a backbone anymore!!

May God have mercy on us and free us from this mad-hatter / would be dictator /wanna-be-king.

I Will Not Go Quietly into That Dark Night

Lead, do not follow. Speak up, do not remain silent. His goal is moving our country to an authoritarian dictatorship. Eyes wide open or Eyes clamped shut. What example do you want to set for your children? Your grandchildren? Do we stand and fight for our first amendment rights. Do we stand behind our Constitution and Bill of Rights? Or do you choose to let it slide, wait and see, believe it will go away… if you sit back and wait, it will be too late. Every single thing they do, moves them closer to their dark goal of dictatorship… it won’t be dump in charge. He’s the face, the patsy. Putin, Vance, and others behind the scenes are orchestrating it all. Putin is moving in on Alaska. The middle east is being given land in the U.S. to  build a military compound. Ice, detention centers, mass executions,  boats randomly blown up as a show of power… lies, lies, lies fly from their poisonous lips as our founding fathers turn over in their graves. We need to think not only of what they are doing today, but we need to think about the future we leave to our children, grandchilden, and future generations. I for one do not accept this madness, this spell, these horrors that have been accepted by most Americans. People who close their eyes, their ears and say, oh, don’t worry, it will go away. It’s only for four years… Are “We The People” standing behind our constitution, or are you standing for the reich and stomping all over our Constitution? Wake up and smell the flesh burning… Hitler is rising in the u.s.a. today.
Please listen to /read JFK’s speech on Our Rights, Our Constitution. Please save this land I love… the home of the free and the brave… at least it was….I pray we can turn this debacle around and reclaim our rights and freedoms.

Still I Rise…

As a native Texan, I love my state. And today, I am heartbroken by the devastation that has occurred in one of my most beloved areas of Texas… the hill country. Last night, after hearing about the massive flooding occurring along the Guadalupe, as well as children and camp counselors missing from a summer camp near the river, I felt helpless. I’ve been there many times, camped nearby, and enjoyed the openness of the countryside and the beauty of a Texas sky brilliant with millions of stars. I’ve also been there when it’s rained so much that the knees of your jeans stretch so much from the weight of the water and mud that you end up walking on them. Flash floods happen so quickly there, and when they do, the campers and people living near the river need to be advised. They need to be warned. My heart aches, and I am devastated for the parents and families of these precious ones…the children, the camp counselors, and the citizens of Kerr County. I am also angry… I am angry that this tragedy occurred when it could have been prevented.
I wrote a post on this last night when I first heard. I prayed for the families, those lost, and those missing. And I became so angry when I thought that this could have been prevented. It could have been prevented. How? We had a national weather service group called FEMA. FEMA, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, monitored and put out warnings long before the bad weather or weather anomalies occurred. They sent warnings via text, phone calls, the Internet, and television. And someone, someone at that camp would have received the warning… However, FEMA was recently dismantled as a useless waste of money by trump just a few short months ago. Why… he needs more golf balls? He is hateful, vicious, and deadly to our nation. This catastrophe should have never occurred. FEMA should have been there. If they had, they would have been able to send out emergency alerts. If they had not been dismantled by trump, fifty-nine people would still be with us. Fifty-nine souls are now gone with many, many more still missing. My anger mounts. My heart breaks for the families, for the children, for all who lost their lives, their homes, their peace of mind.
I posted my initial response right after I heard last night. Today, I had determined not to write more on this tragedy. However, one man forced me to, Texas Governor Greg Abbott. How? In the midst of discussing what is being done to help Texas families affected by the flood, he stopped and made a comment praising trump for flying down here to check on us. Praising the one who took away a safeguard that has worked very well since it was put into place by President Jimmy Carter in 1979. I cannot allow this remark that has no credibility to stand. This trump deserves no praise…only contempt. He caused this tragedy when he dismantled the very services set to prevent such occurrances. Please continue to pray for the people in the Texas hill country.

Independence~  Fact or Fiction

I just answered a young man’s post, and after I reread it, I thought this may need to be shared. I often write from some emotion I’m experiencing. I often write from my heart. Tonight, I wrote from both, as well as a deep, sharp pain stirring within me. After reading comments from young people who have just experienced voting in their first election, my heart felt broken.

The rhetoric being spewed by leaders in our nation is quickly dividing our country into a battle of the Hatfields and the McCoys. Democrats and Republicans are all people who have a choice in their political beliefs. It has always been an open forum of mutual respect and agreeing to disagree. Those who are younger and have only met the debates through the eyes of disdain and hatred are being misled, and this has caused a great rift in our nation. In the past, you voted your choice, and it was your private choice. If your candidate didn’t win, you just put on your big boy pants and worked cooperatively with whomever won. Since the 2016 elections, this has changed. Instead of voting your choice in private, everything is screamed out loud, and charges of cheating, hate for the other party, and anger, great anger, has prevailed. I, for one, miss the days when we could work for a candidate’s campaign and not be fearful of being bullied and shown  hatred because of our individual beliefs. Back then, we were a democracy. We had a choice. We cast our vote. Hate did not rule if our chosen candidate did not win.

I have seen and experienced the ugliness of bullies in other areas of my life. I have tried to avoid them as much as possible. However, since 2016, hate has been the flavor of the day. Anyone who disagrees with the other party will receive criticism and sometimes even be physically harmed. This is not the United States of America. This is a takedown by bullies who are so unhappy with themselves and their own lives that they must put others down. Sometimes, they take it even farther and threaten physical harm to those they feel are not on their side. They do this just to make themselves feel better about themselves.

In the 2016 elections, our nation, by a very slim margin, first voted in an old man who had made fabulous promises throughout the land. His promises turned out to be fairy dust.

Then, four years later, in 2020, another older man stepped in desiring to help the people of the United States and improve the U.S. economy. He did this very well. And our country grew stronger again both financially and emotionally.

Sadly, jealousy overcame the first old man, so in 2024, he worked extremely hard to destroy the sitting President. He achieved his desire with promises he never meant to keep. This old man’s jealousy was beyond measure, for he desired to be the only top dog in our U.S. Government. Once in office for his second term, instead of building his cabinet from respected candidates, he built it with illiterate news reporters and ner-do-wells. This person promised to unite our country and to make it strong and great again. Yet, within six short months, he has done exactly the opposite. Rather than uniting our country, he has created a great divide. He has caused a great hatred between parties, and he is imprisoning those he feels are unworthy of his greatness.

Instead of continuing the spread of hate by spouting how much he hates democrats, he should be seeking out and celebrating the beauty of diversity and thought within our country. He should be helping to heal this nation of broken people. We as citizens deserve to feel cared for and protected. We should not have to step up and be an example for those in charge of our government. Instead, once an election is over, we should all, whether democrat or republican, feel 100% supported by our United States government.

Sadly, when I turned on the news this evening, the sitting president was speaking. His words were ripe with hatred, and it hurt so badly to hear him say, “I hate democrats!” This creates yet another rift, as well as confusion for those who are new to the voting process. They are fragile and easily influenced, and they have a right to use their voice. They have a right to choose how they vote without fear of being threatened just because they voted republican or voted democrat.

We should all feel safe and secure within this country, our United States of America. We should not be hated because of political beliefs. We should not have to watch the news and cringe when they talk of Ice, those masked monsters, swooping down on people and throwing them into horrid spaces. We should be able to breathe freely, feel secure in our homes, and not fear our United States President.

As for me, I am proud to be an American. I was born here, and I have lived my whole life in this great country. I’ve never had the desire or a need to flee this country as so many in other countries have. I am proud of my heritage, and I have always been proud of my country. I have always been proud to stand and say that I love my country, my USA. Yet, right now, these words are hard to say. Right now, I just feel fearful for the future of this land I love. My heart aches to see my country, my United States of America, betrayed by greed.

Thank you for reading this post. Thank you for having your own opinions, and thank you for respecting mine. This…this freedom of choice we have been given is what our founding fathers, who drafted and signed the Declaration of Independence and our United States Constitution, fought for. It is what we, as citizens and our government officials, should honor and celebrate every single day.

We the People… a fractured land… ’tis not so much a fairy tale

Another day, another arrest of an American citizen. Another day, another deportation of an American citizen. The king has declared that it is fine and dandy to arrest American citizens who do not match his idea of an American.

According to the king’s parameters, you must be born in the USA, you must be lily white, and you must be a traitor to the U.S. Constitution. In order to be in the king’s favor, you must be a racist. You must have no respect for women. You must only be concerned with the king’s greatness and be in total worship of him. You must have walked away from all ethical beliefs. You must fawn and drool over the king. And most important of all, you must forget about and abandon the American people. Many who have represented the people have embraced these very beliefs.

The king cares only for himself. His pawns cuddle up to their nazi leader, hoping for his approval… They wag their tails, hoping for a belly rub or a scratch on the back. Eyes wide open, they eagerly lap up the milk that poisons the people. Ignorance is bliss in their eyes.

Meanwhile, in the real world, unforgivable, horrendous actions are damaging American citizens. Many American citizens are being swept off the streets and thrown into prisons with no rhyme or reason. All of the laws that protect citizens, as well as constitutionally guarantee legal rights, have been abolished because this King reigns with a cruel, ugly stick.

Yet, this King comes to us offering his failed, empty life as his prize. No amount of money can ever be enough to please him. His family, his colleagues, his public, his priest all loathe him in silence. They do not speak his truth. They debate and wonder, even though they know that this wanna be king is mad as a hatter, off the grid, angry and hateful to all.

Yet, gloriously, citizens of the United States have chosen to band together to debate his fate. As the minutes are read, the crowd grows louder, the chorus rises, and the voice of the people won’t be put down. Their rumble resounds with a mighty force, their feet on pavement pound towards the door. Their lives hang in balance as their battle cry rises, “Dump him, dump him, dump the King. The crowd grows louder, the king runs to hide, all of his moxie has died inside.

After a while, the great door creaks open, a face peeks out, and then a little old man stumbles as he steps out on the lawn. This tiny, pathetic little man reaches out his hands. His voice is shaky as he slowly spits out, “Don’t hurt me, I’m your all-powerful king.” The crowd it did grumble, the crowd it did laugh. This pitiful beast was a mere man with no force. His jaw it did tremble, his voice it  did break, as he asked in anger, “What should I do? This is my land, my take.” The crowd it erupted with great disdain as a song burst from their lips and filled the air, “We shall, we shall not be moved…” The little man, the one who treated others with hatred, disdain, and contempt, began to shrink more. His presumed power, in fact, a sham, a bluff, a poorly made plan. As he shrank to the ground, his hands in the air, another song rose as the crowd pushed on…”THESE times they are a changin’.”

As the music of protest, the songs of anti- establishment, anti- powermongers resonated across the lawn, the door opened, and people poured out in droves. A few went to the side of the little old man who lay crying on the lawn. Most ran to join in the songs… songs of power, songs of strength, songs that now, as in the past, spoke our hearts, spoke our truth, spoke out against evil dictators, oligarchs, and all those who bent to kiss his hem.

As we feel deflated, as we feel scared, as we pray with our whole hearts for normalcy and truth to once again reign, do not give up. We shall overcome, we shall overcome, we shall overcome this some day. If you remember, or if you heard about it from someone, LET YOUR 60’S SHINE! We need a revolution! We need to FIGHT for our freedom. We shall not fight with weapons, but with our words, our hearts, and our prayers.

One horrid man wrote the plan. Another horrid man implemented it. More horrid senators and congressmen joined their lunacy… Yet, here we stand, and we fight, not with weapons, but with words established by our forefathers in our United States Constitution…

WE THE PEOPLE of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.

As old men fall, as others crawl, as representatives of the people turn their backs on their duty, REMEMBER, WE the PEOPLE elected you, we the people will remember those who stood by the people and our Constitution. And we will never forget the snakes who crawled on their bellies to support money and a wanna be dictator instead of the people… the people… the people who trusted in you. You have broken faith, you have damaged our belief, and you have followed evil.

We the people… we the PEOPLE of the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, sound our cry… we shall not be moved, destroyed, or stolen from by greed and oligarchs. We, the people, are, in fact, the strength of this nation, and we shall overcome this evil…

These Words…

“We the People, in order to form a more perfect Union, establish justice, ensure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.”

THESE WORDS MEAN SOMETHING TO ME! These words are a promise that I grew up with. These words should not be lightly received nor lightly dismissed.
Tonight, my heart dropped, tears clouded my eyes, and I think my jaw dropped. WHY? Because the American people have been betrayed by our supreme court, our republican party, and most thoroughly by the man who claims to be the president of these united states.
When I think of a President, I think of someone who is a moral compass, a father figure who watches over and cares for the people, not just some, but all of the people within our great United States.
Yet, tonight, I realized that this picture, this belief no longer stands. No longer can I feel cared for and safe. No longer can I believe in the American dream.
What is at the core of this treasonous government? The power of money, the power of hatred, and the love of power. Money has bought the supreme court. Money has purchased the republican party. Hatred and greed are now in charge of our country.
As tears slide down my cheeks, slip onto the page, and form a river of sadness in the crease of the page, my heart literally breaks.
To know that the supreme court has awarded him ultimate power with no recourse from the other branches to stop him is unthinkable… HOW can this be… THIS IS NOT OF THE PEOPLE, FOR THE PEOPLE, OR BY THE PEOPLE. This… this is hate… hate, jealousy, the great takeover of power that WEAK men seek. And this time, weak, pitiful men have captured this power. Not from goodness, not from love of country, not from care of the citizens of our United States. No, this… this is a concentrated multi-decade takeover of power by a hitler-like administration… How???
Easy… they cause confusion, they cause hatred, they cause the removal and death of those considered easily removable and vulnerable.
My heart is breaking, my tears cascading because tonight, the so-called supreme court caved and gave him the right to deny and deport those that hatred deems to have an unacceptable birthright citizenship.
If you know anything at all about history. These steps are the first and final steps towards any and every citizen being deemed a non-citizen. The reason why doesn’t matter. The reich, the nazi party laid out their plan… prison camps have already been established in our cities and towns. People are already being held without bond, without rights, without any hope of release. They have been labeled as dissidents, they have been labeled as threats to society, they have been labeled as examples to what can happen to any one of us no matter who we are or how long our lineage in the United States of America has been established.
Look at California. They stood up for their people, they stood up for their workers, they stood up for their rights. In return, nazi troops have been sent in to maim, kill, and imprison innocent men, women, and children for exercising their right to protest. Nazi soldiers hiding behind masks, beating, killing, imprisoning our people.
If you think nazi is too strong a word to use, think again. The plan being carried out in government right now is from hitler’s playbook.
The next step is to establish concentration and death camps.
How in today’s world can this be true? The answer… money, money, money… the root of all evil. Billionaires are stuffing the pockets of the republican senators and congress. And now, with another new dick appointee on the supreme court, they have bought the supreme court. They’ve been given the cookie jar, and they are greedily stuffing all the cookies in their mouths at once. Hatred knows no bounds when greed is the purpose.
I am suffocating from the hatred that is emanating from our “elected” United States government. I can only sit back and cry… cry me a river and drown in it at the same time, as I think of the fate of my country, my home, my stronghold… my United States of America.

These essential laws have been broken and thrown onto a funeral pyre… a funeral for the USA. Welcome to the Titanic… please, step aboard….

In the Avenue.. 5th Avenue

I know, I know. I need to turn off the TV and radio. I need to put on an old record that soothes and pulls me back… back… far, far away from the hatred and fear infecting our country today.

Yet, here it is, just  staring us in the face… A birthday parade to deflect from the horrific truth of what is occurring in the USA today. The truth is that we are now living in an era that will be remembered in the same way as WW2 and the battle against the horrific terror and oppression of Hitler. There’s also the madness within the Johnson era of government wherein police beat and jailed peaceful protesters opposing the Vietnam War. This era ensued with beatings of college students by police and an insipid hatred of the long-haired hippies peacefully demonstrating and protesting the war and the reich. I’m not done yet…

There’s more.. don’t forget, we had “tricky Dick” ~ Richard Nixon. He conned and bribed anyone and everyone… especially the American people. And… he was impeached, tossed away, disgraced! Oh, how I wish our government had the gall, the honesty to do what’s right for the American people, and toss away another obnoxious p-resident evil. But, no, they bow and pamper to him. They cater to his every whim as he daydreams of being king Louis with his dear “Marie Antoinette.” Their voices raised as they agree that we, the peasants, have no place in their lives. They laugh as Marie intones, “If they have no bread, let them eat cake.” Let the peasants starve and die, we will be ensconced in our castle and never hear them moan.

Sadly, all these characters did exist, and they caused great harm. Yet, now a new monster has risen. A monster who makes past offenders seem non-invasive. This senile  monster crawls around like a very spoiled little boy whose only goal is breaking everyone’s toys. Then he has the audacity to demand that everyone must celebrate his birthday by worshipping him as he rides by in a golden carriage. His dementia filled eyes will imagine that the angry protesters are waving wildly and glorifying him. THE Donald king expects the multitude within his kingdom to applaud and greet him with joy. However, as he realizes their cries are not supportive nor joyful, he stomps, he  threatens, and he pouts like a spoiled child. His blind rage intesifies as he realizes… he gave a parade, yet, NOBODY came to celebrate and admire him, sir Donald, the dump.

In a world where you can be anything, I would like to live in a world where our leader is good, true, and honest. This objective is possible as long as the leader strives to support the needs of the country, rather than acting as a selfish spoiled boy whose only objective is to get his own way. Hitler Rises

Texas, our Texas, all hail the Lone Star State. Texas, our Texas, so wonderful and great… Texans far and wide are celebrating the fact that they have won. They have won… and BOOKS WILL BE BANNED.
As a native Texan, I am horrified. My heart is breaking…

You may wonder why… you may not care. However, I care greatly. I care because I understand the impact this will have on our future, our freedom, and our lives.

Why I am making a fuss when it’s only books that some people feel should not be in school libraries? Why? Why does it matter? Why should everyone care? If you have to ask why, you are either too young or you have ignored your history lessons.           

In my mind, I see a young girl. This girl was just like me when I was young. She loved to read; she treasured her books. She consumed books, and she wrote down her thoughts, feelings, dreams, and hopes in her book… her diary.
In the beginning, her diary only contained her personal reflections of her thoughts, feelings, and dreams. Yet, in the background of her life, events were taking place that a young girl should never have to imagine or experience.

A new face came into the German political scene. He had ingratiated the world with his charm. He had been named Time Magazine’s Man of the Year in 1938. His face and name were everywhere. Everyone thought this young man would make such a difference in this world. This young man’s name? Adolf Hitler.

He won the seat, he took his place, and then… right from the start…. he began his plan. His plan was to eliminate all those whom he did not feel were worthy of life, eliminate all those who opposed his plan to conquer and rule Germany, and then expand out into the world stage. His plan was monstrous, horrific, and widely accepted.    

You might ask why anyone would accept his plan? He made it sound so right, so personable, so good for the people. Then, once the plan was set in place, people began to realize that this dictator, this monster, cared nothing about anything or anyone, only about his own ultimate power.

Anne Frank, the young girl who carried around her favorite book and dreamed big dreams of her future, her life, and her goals had only a very short time left on this earth. For within a matter of months, her community, her family, and she, herself, were put to death in the most horrific and atrocious fashion, merely because they did not fit the dictator’s fascist ideology.

At this point in time, our leaders, our Texas leaders, are following the playbook of Hitler. They do not say this, but they are, in fact, following all the guidelines of how to “pull the wool over the public’s eyes, and keep them in the dark until it is too late.”

They are starting with the little things. They are dismantling public education, they are banning books, they are limiting people’s access to voting…. and hundreds of other “little things, that in the end will lead to annihilation for of all who do not accept and join in to the new regime.

People we have put our faith in. People who accepted the job of upholding our U.S. and our Texas constitution.

These people… Trump, Abbott, and so many more are walking in the footsteps of Adolph Hitler. I cry out now because I love my country. As a historian, as a researcher, as a human being, I recognize the baby steps being taken by would be Hitlerites, or those whose goal it is to take ultimate power and dismantle our constitution and constitutional rights.  

All the bickering in Congress and the Senate are a mere ploy. A ploy put together by the reich to distract us as they dismantle our Constitution, our Bill of Rights, and our USA as we know it.

Am I being paranoid? Am I crying wolf? I wish I were. Unfortunately, unless more people speak up, our next step will be living out the story of Nazi Germany in the USA.

What can you do? Add your voice, speak up, and let people in office know that all these “little things” like banning books will soon become big things. Prison camps will spring up, concentration camps will follow, as well as, executions… all in the name of fascists government. Don’t hide inside and say this will never happen. When the people are silent, evil creeps in.

Stand up for our country. Stand up for our rights. Be proud of our country, our red, white, and blue. Stand up for what my father, my uncles, and many of your family fought for in WW2. Do you want to be ruled by a fascist regime? I do not.

I do not fight with weapons. I fight with words. Today, my words are harsh and strong. I did not make up any of these events or people. I could have described the events in the horrific, inhumane way they actually happened, but for the sake of decency, I only grazed the surface of the story. 

I am so very proud that my family stood up and fought in WW2, that my husband and his brother stood up and fought in Vietnam. Anytime people stand up against a fascist regime that is attempting to overrun and overtake a country, they can be proud of their service. Stand strong, stand up for right. Now…I will yield the floor.
